Coverage Explorer
Your Car, Covered
Auto insurance is really several coverages working together — some required in South Carolina, some optional but valuable. Explore the car below to see what each part generally does. This is general education, not a coverage determination — your GSP agent confirms what your specific policy includes.

01
Liability
Damage and injuries you cause to othersThe risk
Damage and injuries you cause to others. If you cause an accident, you can be responsible for the other people’s injuries and property. South Carolina REQUIRES liability coverage, with minimum limits of 25/50/25 ($25k per person / $50k per accident bodily injury, $25k property damage).
The coverage
Bodily injury & property damage liability. Liability coverage generally responds to others’ injuries and property damage when you’re at fault, up to your limits. The state minimums are low for today’s costs — many drivers carry higher limits, and pair them with an umbrella, to protect their assets.

02
Collision
Damage to YOUR car in a crashThe risk
Damage to YOUR car in a crash. Liability pays for the other guy — collision is what repairs or replaces your own vehicle after a crash, whether you hit another car or an object.
The coverage
Collision coverage (with a deductible). Collision generally pays to repair or replace your car after an accident, minus your deductible. It’s optional by law but usually required by a lender or lessor while you’re financing the vehicle.

03
Comprehensive
Theft, weather, deer, fire, flood, glassThe risk
Theft, weather, deer, fire, flood, glass. Plenty happens to a car that isn’t a collision — theft, hail and wind, a deer strike, a falling limb, vandalism, fire, and (important in the Lowcountry) flood. A car submerged in storm water is a common coastal loss.
The coverage
Comprehensive (“other than collision”). Comprehensive generally covers non-crash damage, minus a deductible. Worth knowing for our area: flood damage to a CAR is generally covered by comprehensive auto — unlike a home, where flood needs a separate policy.

04
Uninsured Motorist
The other driver has no (or too little) insuranceThe risk
The other driver has no (or too little) insurance. A meaningful share of drivers on the road are uninsured or underinsured. If one of them injures you or damages your car, their (missing) coverage can’t help you.
The coverage
Uninsured / underinsured motorist (UM/UIM). South Carolina REQUIRES uninsured motorist coverage and makes underinsured coverage available. It generally steps in to cover your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver can’t — one of the most valuable coverages on the policy.

05
Medical Payments
Medical bills after a crash, regardless of faultThe risk
Medical bills after a crash, regardless of fault. Injuries from an accident bring medical costs quickly — for you and your passengers — before fault is ever sorted out.
The coverage
Medical payments (MedPay). MedPay is an optional coverage that generally helps with medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, no matter who was at fault. It’s typically inexpensive to add.

06
Roadside & Rental
Breakdowns and being without a car after a claimThe risk
Breakdowns and being without a car after a claim. A flat, a dead battery, or a car in the shop after a covered loss leaves you stranded or paying out of pocket to keep moving.
The coverage
Roadside assistance & rental reimbursement. These optional add-ons generally cover towing and roadside help, and a rental car while yours is repaired after a covered claim. Small additions that make a bad day easier.
